Just another day ….

I look down on two little boys sitting on my lap. Harry and Martin, each on one knee, their heads falling left to right and back at every bump in the road. They are almost asleep, but thankfully we are almost home. In the back of the car are the other children, just picked from school by my husband Toni, and me.

This is a daily routine for us. Sometimes it is a pest, to sit in the car in the endless traffic jams, so typical of Jakarta. But when the children see us coming, and realize they get to go home, their reactions of joy make it all worthwhile.

It starts early in the morning. Lisa, Risky, and Emily hand over their schoolbags, which I put in the back of the car. Then I quickly step into the car next to the children, Toni starts the engine, here we go!

Two hours later the same, only now it is the little ones in the car, seven in total, and our destination this time is the preschool. Due to limited parking space near the school, it is always unsure whether we find a place to ‘unload’ near the school or if we have to walk from the car to the school.

Everyone has their bag, and homework-folder, of we go to the entrance, in a line. I feel like Maria von Trapp from the Sound of Music, who took seven children all across Salzburg. I take seven children inside the school, usually a bit too late.

Next stop: Risky’s school to pick him and Emily up, and from there back home again. While the kids have a small snack, and do their homework, I check my emails and FB messages. Of course I read the news from the Dutch news site. I don’t like reading the embarrassing story about the Euro 2016 exit for the Dutch soccer team, OMG total disappointment.

I look at the time and see it is time to go and pick up the kids, so on our way again. First we pick up the little ones, and two of our staff members come along to help. Upon entering the school premises I see Benny already running around, and there is Roby, and Martin. Okay so let’s count heads, Joshua, Memey, Martin, Roby, Benny, Jimmy, who is missing? Ah Harry, yes, there he comes.

Quickly to the other school to pick up Lisa! Finally everybody is home again!

It is three ‘o clock in the afternoon, and all the kids are awake from their nap, and having a snack. I am either working behind the computer, or in the kitchen cooking. From where I sit I can hear the children’s voices, laughing, yelling, and arguing, sometimes crying. I know they are happy. We have pretty much the same routines everyday, which makes their life well-structures and therefore easy to understand. In a little while dinner will be served, and then it is time for a nice cool bath!

The evenings are usually filled with fun inside, watching television, and drinking a glass of milk. Most of the days I brush the children’s teeth, and then Oh dear, another day has gone by, time to sleep!
